The top detective agency in India should look into the fatal crash that claimed 275 lives, according to a recommendation from the country's railway ministry.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, made the announcement but provided no additional information.
Preliminary reports from investigations led by the railways indicate that the crash was caused by a signal fault.
The three-train collision on Friday evening has been called the worst rail accident in India in the last 100 years.
More than a thousand people were injured and taken to hospitals. Some families are still looking for missing members.
It's unclear why, given that other investigations have already gotten underway, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the ministry's top decision-making body, has recommended opening a separate investigation.
The CBI looks into high-profile crimes, such as heinous financial frauds and homicides.
On Sunday, Mr. Vaishnaw claimed that the "criminal act's" perpetrators and "the root cause" of the accident had been identified.
He continued by stating that the accident was probably caused by a "change in electronic interlocking.". Wait for the final report, the minister urged.
He stated that the cause would be revealed in a report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety that would soon be made public.
The Coromandel Express' engine and coaches collided with a goods train on Sunday, according to the railways, who also claimed that a signal problem and a "change in electronic interlocking" were to blame.
To ensure the safe movement of trains along the track, the electronic interlocking system in railway signaling establishes routes for each train in a specific area.
The Coromandel Express coaches were thrown onto a third track by the impact of the collision, where they collided with the back carriages of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express as it was speeding down the line.
The two passenger trains are believed to have carried more than 3,000 passengers.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) chief, Atul Karwal, claimed that several coaches were crushed as a result of the collision's force. To get to the passengers, rescuers had to cut through the wreckage.
Hundreds of ambulances, medical professionals, nurses, and rescue workers were dispatched to the scene and spent the next 18 hours pulling bodies and passengers to safety.
Mr. Vaishnaw reported Sunday night that the accident site's railroad tracks were once again open for train traffic.
According to reports, a number of passengers remain missing.
The leaders of the opposition have urged Mr. Vaishnaw to accept responsibility for the tragedy and resign.
In response, the government's Bharatiya Janata Party urged people not to make the accident political.
