Tennis legend Bjorn Borg was forced to leave a ceremony in Bangalore (Bengaluru), India, after a prominent politician arrived nearly two hours late.
Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka state, whose capital is Bangalore, was scheduled to honor Borg on Tuesday.
The program was supposed to start at 9:30 am, but Mr. Bommai arrived at 11:15 am.
By that time, Borg had left to watch his son Leo play tennis.
The chief minister was running behind schedule because of "some of his other commitments," an unnamed official from the organizing committee told the Deccan Herald newspaper.
Politicians and celebrities frequently arrive late, sometimes by several hours, to events in India.
Mr. Bommai spent about 20 minutes watching Leo's match with Taiwanese tennis player Hsu Yu-hsiou at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) stadium before leaving. Later, the ceremony honoring Borg was postponed.
Along with Borg, former Indian tennis pro Vijay Amritraj was also scheduled to receive recognition.
The program was canceled, according to Sunil Yajaman, joint secretary of KSLTA, because Amritraj believed it would be "inappropriate" for him to receive recognition all by himself.
He told BBC Hindi that "both of them will be felicitated at the chief minister's office tomorrow or the day after.".
Leo was participating in the KSLTA's Bengaluru Tennis Open. The match was lost by the 19-year-old 6-2, 6-3.
Later, at a dinner Amritraj hosted in Borg's honor, Borg signed his picture in the KSLTA Hall of Fame.
