According to police, a shooter at Michigan State University has left at least three people dead.
Police reported that in addition to the three victims, the suspect had apparently died from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound.".
In the attack late on Monday at the main campus in the city of East Lansing, five more people were hurt.
The suspect was described by police as "a black male, of shorter stature.". Later, they claimed that he was 43 years old and unrelated to the university.
During the manhunt, police issued a shelter-in-place order for locals and students, but they later lifted it after determining that there was "no longer a threat to campus.".
The suspect was "located off campus," they added.
The suspect appeared in earlier photos wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap, and red athletic shoes.
Shortly after 20:00 local time on Monday (01:00 GMT Tuesday), shooting began.
When police arrived at the scene of the assault, they discovered victims at the nearby Michigan State University Union building and at Berkey Hall on the north side of the campus.
The police reported multiple crime scenes and said their investigation was ongoing during a news briefing. It is unknown what motivated the attacker.
A number of ambulances were seen making their way to the scene, and the injured, some of whom are reportedly in critical condition, are currently receiving medical care in hospitals.
Deputy Chief Chris Rozman of the university police department declared, "This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight.
