From the 2023 tournament, Wimbledon will only play best-of-three sets in the men's doubles match

Wimbledon will only play three sets in the men's doubles competition starting in 2023

Men's doubles matches at Wimbledon will no longer be best of five sets; instead, they will now be best of three.

The change aligns Wimbledon with the other three Grand Slams, which hold the competition over three sets.

Australia's Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell won the 2022 championship after a marathon match that lasted four hours and eleven minutes and featured scores of 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-4 7-6 (10-2).

The decision was reached after "wide-ranging consultation," according to the All England Club, which organizes Wimbledon.

More pairs would enter the men's doubles at the grass-court major thanks to the move, which would also give the scheduling of matches "greater certainty," it was added.

Nick Kyrgios, who had just won the men's doubles title at the Australian Open, expressed his displeasure at having to play five sets at SW19 prior to Wimbledon in 2022.

The Australian later withdrew in order to focus on his singles campaign, in which he reached the final, before the doubles match even started.

He uttered those words at the time, "I think it is the stupidest thing ever.

"I don't understand why it's best of five sets. Nobody wants to play or watch best-of-five-set doubles.
